Five Star ReviewSmall intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common condition where excess bacteria in the small intestine cause symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.
Our SIBO Breath Test is a simple home test where you collect breath samples after drinking lactulose sugar-solution. You'll send the breath samples to our lab for analysis of hydrogen and methane levels. We'll explain whether your results suggest SIBO in your online doctor's report.
You'll also get a consultation with one of our gut-health doctors to discuss your results and treatment options.
SIBO is a common gut condition where there are an excess of bacteria in the small bowel. These bacteria metabolise carbohydrate in your diet to produce gasses that lead to symptoms such as bloating. Bacteria can also affect the absorption of fat and vitamins leading to diarrhoea and deficiencies.
SIBO is well-known to cause gut symptoms such as:
However, SIBO symptoms aren't limited to the gut. SIBO can also cause:
As we learn more about the gut-brain axis and the gut-skin axis, we're discovering that SIBO is linked to a number of other conditions. These include:
The SIBO Breath test is based on the fact that bacteria in the small intestine metabolise sugars to produce hydrogen and methane gas which we can measure in your breath. High levels of hydrogen or methane in your breath after drinking a sugar solution indicates that you have SIBO.
The goal of SIBO treatment is not to eradicate all the bacteria from the small intestine. Rather, we need to modulate them in a way that improves symptoms.
Because SIBO has many different causes, there's no one-size-fits-all treatment. We need to tailor the treatment to the individual. This is why we include a consultation with one of our gut-health doctors with this test.
We find that a holistic approach to SIBO treatment produces the best results and minimises relapse. This involves:
Bacteria in the small intestine metabolise sugars to produce hydrogen and methane gas which we can measure in your breath. Higher levels of hydrogen or methane can indicate SIBO.
You'll need to prepare for your SIBO Breath Test by:
We'll go through all these instruction in detail with your test kit.
Your samples are semt to our specialist lab partner in Europe for analysis. It usually takes about 2-5 days for samples to arrive.
Once the lab have received your samples, we generally have results in a few days. However, at most it can take up to 14 days to get your results.
The hydrogen and methane breath test following lactulose is the recommended method for diagnosing SIBO. However, as with any test, it can give false positive and false negative results.
Studies have shown that if you have a positive SIBO breath test then there's about 60-70% chance that your symptoms will respond to SIBO treatment. On the other hand, if you have a negative SIBO breath test result, then the chance that you'll respond to treatment is only about 20%.
