Your cholesterol levels - or "lipid profile" as it's also known - tells you how your body is handling fats. It's not just a reflection of what you eat, it's also affected by your weight, sleep, stress, exercise and genes. So your cholesterol levels give you a "big picture" view on your body's metabolism.
Your cholesterol levels are also one of the main factors that determine your risk of heart disease, stroke and dementia.
Cholesterol levels are most useful when you track them over time. They might be fine now, but if you see them creeping up little-by-little every year then you know that you're not on the best path for your health. You get an early warning so you can take action before you get high cholesterol and the problems that go with it.
Guidelines recommend checking your cholesterol regularly:
When did you last check your level?
Your lipid profile - the levels of triglycerides and cholesterols in your blood - is an important risk factor for heart disease, stroke and dementia.
WHAT'S MEASURED?
You'll get a full breakdown of your lipid profile - the levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in your blood. High levels mean that you're at higher risk of heart disease and should take action. But even if your levels are normal now, tracking your cholesterol over time will show you if you need to make changes now to stop your levels getting high in the future.
