“A really good experience before, during and after wearing a glucose monitor supplied by Selph. The follow up was excellent they took the time with me and explained things very clearly. I feel I learned a lot about the way my body deals with glucose, and how I can improve that. The follow up email was also informative. Great value for money. Thanks Selph.”

Five Star ReviewSelph CGM is the better way to use a continuous glucose monitor.
CGMs are great tools for understanding how your body handles your blood sugar but, like any tool, you need to know how to use it. That's where Selph comes in. You'll use the CGM for 2 weeks to see in real-time the effects of diet, exercise, sleep and stress on your blood sugar.
But then we go deeper. To really uncover how your body handles sugar, we'll stress your metabolism with an oral glucose challenge. This is a drink that contains 75g of glucose and we'll measure your blood sugar response over 2 hours. This is a much more sensitive way to look for insulin resistance than than just looking at your day-to-day glucose levels.
Lastly, to really get the most benefit from your data, you'll have a consultation with one of our doctors to go through your results in detail. They'll give you a report with recommendations on how to improve your sugar-handling.
Selph CGM goes much deeper than other CGM services giving you more for your money. In addition to the CGM sensor and app to monitor your sugar levels, you'll get an oral glucose challenge, a 30 minute consultation with one of our doctors and a report with recommendations on how to improve your sugar-handling.
Your metabolic health is the foundation of your overall health. It affects your risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia and diabetes. Insulin resistance - the process by which your body requires more insulin to keep your blood sugar levels in check - is the key hallmark of poor metabolic health.
A continuous glucose monitor is one of the best ways we have to look for insulin resistance. It provides a unique "window" on your metabolic health. Once you know where you stand with your metabolic health, you can make changes to your diet, exercise and lifestyle to improve it and reduce your risk of chronic disease.
Many of us can have a degree of insulin resistance without seeing any abnormalities in our blood sugar levels. This is because blood sugar levels are tightly controlled by the body and it will do everything it can to keep them in the normal range. Your levels won't rise until any insulin resistance is quite advanced.
To uncover any insulin resistance, we need to stress your metabolism. We do this by giving you a drink containing 75g and monitoring the your blood sugar levels over the next few hours. Your glucose response, how high you peak and how long it takes for your glucose to return to baseline, gives us a much more sensitive measure of your sugar-handling.
A lot of people think that a CGM is a tool to tell you what you should and shouldn't eat. Unfortunately, many companies market it as such. But this is overly simplistic and unhelpful.
Yes, it can sometimes be interesting to see that a particular food affects your blood sugar more than you thought it would. But for the most part, it's pretty obvious that your blood sugar will go up if you eat a piece of cake! Furthermore, there are lots of other factors - such as sleep, stress and exercise - that affect your response to a particular food on a particular day.
It's far more powerful to use the CGM to give you a readout on the current state of your metabolic health and to track how it changes over time as you make changes to improve your health. Think of it like this. If you had a car that made a funny noise at 70mph, the solution isn't to just drive under 60mph. You'd take the car to a mechanic and get the engine fixed. Similarly, if your blood sugar is high after a particular food, the solution isn't to just avoid that food. You need to fix your metabolic engine.
We use the Freestyle Libre 2 CGM which is a small sensor that you wear on your arm for 2 weeks. It measures your glucose levels every 15 minutes and sends them to an app on your phone.
Yes, the CGM sensor is waterproof so you can wear it while you do all your usual activities including working out and swimming.
The oral glucose challenge is a drink containing 75g of glucose. We'll measure your blood sugar response over 2 hours to see how your body handles a large sugar load.
No, you don't have to have diabetes to get benefit from a continuous glucose monitor. A CGM is just a tool to measure your blood sugar in real time and there are a lot of useful insights that someone without diabetes can get from using one.
However, diabetics may use a CGM all the time to help them manage their condition. For non-diabetics, it's probably not helpful to use a continuous glucose monitor this often We generally recommend that people consider using one for a two week period ever 6 to 12 months to get insights into their metabolic health.
